All the important facts about the stair landing

A stair landing is for safety, but also for comfort, and it is also a plannable escape zone. The platform allows you to walk comfortably past each other, to take a short breather, but also to transport bulky items. The staircase construction standard DIN 18065 regulates exactly when a platform is required and what size it should be.

There are these types of stair landings

Stair landings are part of straight stairs as well as stairs that change direction or twist. Roughly speaking, they are divided into three types:

  • Concurrent stairs are central landings. You simply continue in the same direction that the steps already indicate.
  • Reversible landings are installed in stairs running in opposite directions, which allow a bend of 180 degrees.
  • Stairs that bend about 90 degrees are given corner or quarter landings that follow the change of direction.

However, the stair landing is not only used to guide the stairs, but is prescribed as a crucial safety element after a certain number of steps.

After how many steps must a landing be installed?

According to the aforementioned staircase construction standard, multi-storey building stairs must have an escape zone in the form of a platform after a maximum of 18 steps. This applies to houses with at least three apartments.

The prescribed size of the landing

The platform depth is stipulated by building regulations; according to the Model Building Regulations (MBO), it should be a step width plus the step size of the respective staircase. DIN 18065 also has a fixed rule:

In residential buildings with a maximum of two apartments, intermediate landings on stairs must be at least 80 cm wide, or 2.5 times the size of the smallest step. Buildings with more than two apartments require at least 100 cm platforms or 3.5 times the size of the step.

If there are doors on the stair landing, it must be possible to open them completely on the landing area. This often requires a width of more than 80 cm.

Spiral stairs with a landing

Spiral staircases should also be provided with platforms if they go through several floors. However, the calculation of the platform size is more difficult here; the running line must be determined first.

When determining the right platform size, we recommend that you always consult a specialist who is familiar with all the regulations and calculation bases.

Tips & Tricks Also think about the sound decoupling of your stair landing. Either you decouple the entire staircase as a coherent component from the wall using supports - or you plan your landing as a single component that has its own decoupling.
