reinforcement fabric for leveling compound

Reinforcement mesh can also be used in the floor area in conjunction with leveling compound. How to proceed with a reinforcement fabric for leveling compound, we have summarized for you below.

Mending the floor

You can repair or level a floor area in different ways:

Repair the floor with leveling compound

The handling of the leveling compound is easier for many users, as it is basically a self-leveling screed with which the floor can be precisely leveled. It is no longer necessary to reinforce the screed or the leveling compound with a reinforcement fabric on a solid substrate.

Leveling compound with reinforcement mesh on an old wooden floor

However, if the subsurface is not statically stable and, for example, easily yields or can bend, the use of reinforcement mesh is recommended. The typical example of when a reinforcement fabric is used for the leveling compound is an old wooden floor. However, there is still more preliminary work to be done.

Preparatory work: Fasten wooden floorboards, prevent sound bridges

First of all, the old wooden planks must be firmly attached to the subsurface. If necessary, these are screwed tight again. The wooden floor must have as few vibrations as possible. Then large butt joints are filled with a suitable agent such as silicone. The leveling compound must never get into these joints, as this could create sound bridges.

Measures against frictional connection and stress cracks

In addition, as with any wall connection, a separating tape must be inserted along the walls. It is imperative to prevent a frictional connection between the walls and the leveling compound, as otherwise stress cracks could soon occur. The wooden surface may have to be pretreated with a suitable primer (€ 19.50 at Amazon *).

Laying the reinforcement fabric

With the reinforcement fabric, you must ensure that this fabric is alkali-resistant. Now this reinforcement fabric is laid on the floor. It is laid with an overlap of around 10 cm. For the time being, you can clamp the reinforcement fabric to the floor with a staple gun and fix it so that it can no longer slip during leveling.

Leveling with the leveling compound

Now the leveling compound is applied. You start at the lowest point. Depending on its consistency, the mass is either combed first or smoothed immediately. The layer thickness is heavily dependent on the individual requirements and the specifications of the manufacturer of the leveling compound. Nevertheless, the layer thickness of the leveling compound with reinforcement fabric should in most cases be at least 10 mm.

Tips & Tricks Please note that the reinforcement fabric is inserted differently with leveling compound than with other uses. For example, if you want to attach a reinforcement mesh to interior plaster or for similar projects, the mesh is usually placed in the upper third of the total layer thickness. When working with the leveling compound on the floor, the reinforcement fabric is applied first.
