Balcony railing: which material is suitable?

Balcony railings can be made of wood, metal, plastic or glass. There are also many ways to combine the different materials with each other, so that very individual railings are created that often give the house facade a completely new face. And precisely because the balcony railing catches the eye, the selection of the right material is particularly important.

Balcony railings of metal

Metal railings are characterized by the fact that you can create a stable construction with little material. That is why railings made of this material often appear airy and light, they consist of narrow bars and profiles. Fillings are often made of sheet metal or mesh grid.

As a railing construction, several metals come into consideration with different coatings. Which material brings which properties? A brief list of commonly used metal balcony:

  • Balcony railing made of wrought iron: This material looks rustic and is relatively heavy. It is often provided with decorative elements, such as with a floral decor. Wrought iron railings are more robust than aluminum railings and cost less than stainless steel. Powder-coated or galvanized hold the weather stand.
  • Balcony made of stainless steel: stainless steel is considered particularly elegant, but has a pretty high price. The material is corrosion-resistant and easy to care for, the shiny surfaces are a real eye-catcher. It is cheaper if only some elements of the railing are made of stainless steel.
  • Balcony railing made of aluminum: aluminum is easy to care for and maintenance-free. It weighs much less than steel and is therefore sometimes used for static reasons. The material is also available in many different colors, even with wood decor.
  • Brass balcony railings: Brass railings are rarely used, especially outdoors. The material is relatively soft and very expensive. It is particularly suitable for particularly representative facades and listed buildings that are being renovated according to historical models.

Balcony railing made of wood

Wooden railings are either made of softwood or hardwood, and combinations of both can also be found. Hardwood can withstand higher loads, while softwood is cheaper. Nowadays, fillings often consist of inexpensive but robust wood-based panels.

Plastic balcony railings

Plastic railings are particularly inexpensive and are often suitable for self-assembly. Different decors can give the material a more elegant look. Plastic balcony railings are considered to be relatively durable and weather-resistant. However, metal and well-cared for wood usually last longer.

Glass balcony railing

Only shatterproof laminated safety glass (VSG) may be used in the railing area. Glass panels look particularly elegant, they offer a good view from all sides. Tinted or grooved windows, on the other hand, protect against prying eyes.
