Lay concrete pavement yourself

Concrete paving is the cheapest option in terms of the choice between concrete, natural stone and paving clinker, and laying it is problem-free with a little practice. Its uniform dimensions enable it to be laid quickly in a composite. Its uniform color has a disadvantage. Large, single-colored areas in particular usually look boring. You can counteract this by combining two different color tones into patterns.

But now for relocation. You need manhole tools or a mini excavator, paving hammer and a cut-off saw with 230 carbide blade, a vibrating plate (€ 379.00 at Amazon *) folding rule, tape measure and spirit level as well as at least two long aluminum strips, chalk line and a trowel. Auxiliary materials are coarse gravel and fine chippings, possibly. Deep borders and weed fleece.

Step 1: the planning

Decide on the shape of your path. Concrete pavement is relatively easy to cut, so you can insert arches in your path too. Create z. B. the edges in a different color. If the lines are straight, you should align the width of the pavement with the dimensions of the stones to reduce the amount of cutting required.

Step 2: excavate and sub-structure

You can achieve frost protection if you dig the path 40cm deep. This is followed by 5cm coarse gravel, the weed fleece and again 20cm coarse gravel. Both layers are thoroughly compacted with the vibrating plate.

Step 3: making the edges

To ensure that your concrete pavement is closed on the outer edges so that it does not tip over, equip it with low ribs in lean concrete. A second possibility is after laying the pavement in a sloping shoulder made of lean concrete.

Step 4: the laying

Apply approx. 8cm fine chippings. Pull this layer off flat and with a two percent gradient between the two aluminum strips. The height, including the thickness of the concrete paving stones, must be two centimeters above the ground level.
Your installation bed is ready, in which you now lay out the concrete paving stones along the measured chalk line. Check again and again the evenness with the spirit level, but also the even design of the joints.
Finally, sweep fine chippings into the remaining joints and tamp the entire pavement with the vibrating plate and a rubber pad at ground level.
