Build a mobile workbench yourself

When it comes to crafting and repairing, the intended jobs and goals can be very different. In larger households or workshop areas, the self-build a movable workbench is the perfect solution. The mobile mixing structure between the work table and workshop car makes the workplace more comfortable.

Mobility and power supply

If you build a multi-function work bank yourself, you can set the construction on wheels. Since a fully equipped and furnished workbench, in addition to a high weight, also develops the pressure loads when editing workpieces, the roles must be designed for the possibly resulting overall weights and influencing effects.

The second important element for the mobile workbench is the power supply that a workbench needs in order to be illuminated and connections for devices such as a drill (€ 48.00 on Amazon *), soldering iron (€ 18.99 on Amazon *), grinding machine, saw or other electrical craft tools to offer. Well thought-out connection and cabling technology avoids falling, tripping hazards and under-dimensioned action radii.

Selection and suitability of roles

The central element of the mobile workbench are the castors on which it can be moved. With the right selection and assembly, suitability and function stand or fall.

Lockable brakes for the mobile workbench are essential and the weight tolerance must be reasonable. Conventional furniture castors are usually not strong enough. So-called swivel castors follow a path of movement and travel, which facilitates maneuverability.

The following calculation method is used to determine the required roller loads in kilograms:

1. With four wheels attached to the corners, the maximum weight including the machines and workpieces is calculated.

2. The total weight is divided by three. The result defines the required load capacity per role.

3. If 600 kilograms can come together, each roll must be able to carry 200 kilograms.

4th. If there are six rolls, the total weight is divided by four.

Light and power supply

Ideally, a central supply line with a cable that supplies a socket strip on or on the mobile workbench is attached. When moving, only this wiring and, if necessary, decoupling must be observed. A cable reel with spring technology or a cable tensioning box prevents individual cables from becoming tangled. Devices do not have to be individually disconnected from sockets when changing their position and can fall off the workbench if they are careless.

Balance and fall protection

The mobile workbench must not tip over when moving, even if it is "loaded " unevenly. For example, clamped workpieces can cause very uneven weight distribution.

The rollers must be attached as close as possible to the outside of the workbench from below. Corner posts or beams on wooden workbenches offer the ideal mounting surface.

If a workbench is made of metal, brackets or sheets may have to be welded on separately as a fastening aid.

Tips & Tricks If you have a low center of gravity in your workbench, this increases the rolling and stability. For example, you can mount a thick metal plate as the lower floor.
