There is nothing like enjoying a fine drop of grape juice, whether parallel to a meal or in the comfort of the evening before bed. It gets really nice when the wine bottle has been attractively decorated and clearly visible on the shelf and has sparked anticipation there for a long time. After all, a high-quality wine is not only a real treat for the palate, but also wants to be a real feast for the eyes beforehand. We have looked at the most beautiful self-made wine racks - and present them here for imitation!
How should wine be stored?
First of all, the most important thing: a wine bottle should be stored lying down for a long time and not standing up, professional wine racks are designed accordingly. The horizontal storage keeps the cork moist and tight from the inside.

However, more and more bottles with screw caps are currently coming onto the market that do not need horizontal storage. But let's be honest: reclining shelves for wine are much more aesthetic and also give us a good overview of the products available.
If you want to store your wine for more than a few weeks, it is best to choose a location that is 8 to 12 degrees cool and has a rather high level of humidity. However, the grape juice intended for consumption can easily be placed in the middle of the living room or kitchen.
Now to the exciting part: the most beautiful wine racks to build yourself!
Basically, you don't need a lot of material or special know-how to build your own bottle rack. The whole thing doesn't usually get expensive, on the contrary. For these reasons, the DIY method is particularly recommended at this point!
Build wine racks yourself - with wall mounting
Wall mounting is particularly useful where there is no more space for further pieces of furniture. However, a hanging wine rack is so beautiful that it can simply pass as an appealing decoration.
1. Very simple: bars on the wall
The simplest variant is to always drill two holes close to each other in the wall and insert about 20 to 25 cm long rods made of wood or metal. You choose the distance so that there is always room for a wine bottle.
You will be amazed how aesthetic this simple room decoration looks once a bottle has been positioned on all the bars! And you've saved a lot of money on an expensive wine rack from the furniture store.
2. Boards with rings
A second possibility is to screw about 60 cm long, lacquered boards to the wall offset from one another and to provide them with metal rings on the front: a wide ring at the top to hold the bottle body, a narrow ring at the bottom.
Now simply put your bottles in the holder from above, bottle neck down, and you have stored the wine perfectly: Until the next big thirst!
3. Shelf with sloping boards
Also very easy to construct and yet highly effective: the self-made wine rack with sloping boards. First of all, a large-format board is placed on the wall, followed by the narrow shelves for storing the bottles.
Each board is only slightly wider than a wine bottle and slopes upwards at a gentle angle so that it cannot roll out. To be on the safe side, you can of course make a little fall protection.
4th. Glass and bottle rack combined
If you like it a little more complex, you can construct a hanging shelf that not only holds wine bottles, but also the matching glasses. The bottle shelf is on the upper level, while the suspension for good crystal is located below.
In this case, arrange the wine bottles with the opening facing forward. Limit the front of the shelf with a raised board that has semicircular openings at the top to accommodate the bottle necks.
5. Build a triangular wine rack yourself
Something completely different! The triangular wine rack not only catches the eye immediately, it also proves to be extremely practical! Arrange three boards together to form a triangle shaped like a pitched roof, and drill holes the size of bottle necks in the top two.
The lower, horizontal board has notches for hanging up the wine glasses, while you simply insert the wine bottles into the pre-drilled holes at the top. In the middle of the triangle there is enough space for a chic decorative object.
Build wine racks yourself - as stand furniture
Many wine racks are designed so that they can stand on their own. And in this case, too, there is no need to think too complicated and lose yourself in a thousand details: the most beautiful self-made pieces are designed in a very simple way anyway!
6th. Two perforated boards - one shelf
Two boards of the same size can be transformed into a beautiful self-made wine rack very quickly: Simply saw parallel holes in the two wooden panels, only a little larger than the body of a wine bottle.
Then the two boards at a distance of approx. Connect 15 cm together, preferably with solid wooden blocks. Paint everything nicely and insert the bottles: done!
7th. The can work of art
Round cans of all sizes are always ideal for making something out of them. In this case we want to make a wine rack out of them: for this we need some bottomless cans that are big enough to hold a wine bottle body. Smaller containers serve as intermediate pieces.
But first paint all cans inside and outside in your desired color, let the coating dry well and then glue the containers together to form an upright work of art, the openings always aligned horizontally. This is where you put your wine bottles.
8th. Chopsticks shelf
Rods can be inserted not only into walls, but also into thick wooden boards: Take a panel in the format that suits you, build it a simple support that it is slightly inclined, and then insert rods on the front.
The approximately 20 to 25 cm long rods are always arranged in pairs so that you can place a wine bottle on them. Give this self-made wine rack as rustic a touch as possible to create real country house flair.
9. The X-shelf for large wine stocks
A lot of wine fits into a so-called X-shelf: Simply build yourself a box-shaped standing shelf with square compartments first. Then draw boards in an X shape into each of the compartments, so that four triangular openings are created.
Wine bottles can be easily stacked in these triangular compartments, untrapped in the bottom corner, right up to the "roof". You can also plan a normal-shaped shelf to accommodate glasses and dishes.
The wine bar: a particularly stylish solution
Finally, the wine bar remains to be mentioned, a particularly elegant way to present your best wines in the living room! A really nice idea is to convert a discarded wine barrel into a cabinet that contains some wine bottles and the glittering crystal.
A really humorous solution is to cannibalize an old tube TV and convert it into a wine bar, which also looks nostalgic by the way.
Perhaps you would also like to jump on the shabby chic bandwagon and build your own wine cabinet from pallets or fruit boxes, just the way you dream. Basically anything that pleases is possible in this area.
