Closing bottles serves two purposes. Either the contents should be sealed permanently and airtight, as with new bottles, or a flexible and reopenable use cap protects the contents of the bottle. The physical properties of the bottle content must be taken into account.

Typical wine bottle stoppers and reusable cork stoppers can be referred to as closure cones. They are inserted into the neck of the bottle with adequate force so that they jam. When a bottle with a crown cap is opened, the closure usually bends. A crown cap or is designed as a single-use closure.
Twist locks made of aluminum and plastic can be used several times if handled carefully. However, the thread path must have at least two full turns in order to achieve airtightness.
Bottle corks made of natural cork or plastic can, if undamaged, be used to close the opened bottle. Because the top is narrower, the upside-down cork will fit more easily.
