Cleaning the freezer - the best cleaning agents and methods

Regular maintenance maintains the functionality of the freezer. It also ensures hygienic storage and preservation of the quality of the stored food. You can do without the chemical club. You will get good results with gentle cleaning methods.

No cleaning without defrosting

Before you can start cleaning the freezer, it must be completely emptied and defrosted. To do this, switch off the device and leave the door wide open. If you want to speed up the defrosting process, place a bowl of warm water in the freezer and close the door again.

Remove defrost water

Catch the defrosted water on the bottom of the device as much as possible with old kitchen towels or hand towels. A large bowl placed on the floor can also catch the condensation. Thoroughly remove any puddles from the freezer.

Avoid rough cleaning agents

Scratchers, steel wool or scouring pads are not suitable for cleaning the interior walls. The rough structure scratches and damages the plastic surfaces. Corrosive cleaners or scouring milk also affect the surfaces and must not be used.

Suitable cleaning agents

  • Mild soapy water
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Heavily diluted vinegar water
  • Lemon or lavender based cleaner
  • Soft rags and sponges

Don't forget the door seal

Small dirt particles settle on the rubber seals on the freezer door. It is not enough just to clean them during defrosting. They should be wiped with a cleaning cloth more often. You can remove stubborn dirt from the spaces between the lamellas with a toothbrush.
If small black dots have already formed, they are an indication of mold growth. The home remedy in this case is the application of small amounts of toothpaste. After an exposure time, it can be brushed away with the damp toothbrush.

Back of the freezer

Over time, dust and threads form on the back of the device, which you can remove with a duster or feather duster. If the condensed water from the inside of the device is led outside into a collecting container, the container must also be cleaned regularly.

Tips & Tricks The cleaning cloth is dipped in cleaning water and then wrung out. It shouldn't be dripping wet, just damp. After wiping the surfaces, dry them thoroughly with a dry cloth. Residual moisture leads to ice formation as soon as the device is switched on again.
