Softening or new formation

The bandwidth for deforming and redesigning glass bottles with the help of heat exposure ranges from the "random change " to the targeted reworm of the glass. In many home and hobby forums, softening, transformation and mixed forms are spoken. When the "raw material " glass begins to deform during the heating process, it softens and sinks under the force of gravity.

This "automatic" deformation process can be canceled at any time if the random product is liked. If the heating is continued in stages, the glass bottle develops increasingly into an elastic "material soup". This can be "absorbed" by appropriate negative forms. After cooling, the former glass bottle is separated from the negative form in its new form.

Turning a glass bottle into a raw material

For the complete reshaping, the former glass bottle is "dissolved" and the glass is re-poured as a raw material. With this approach, it does not matter in principle whether the glass was in the form of a glass bottle or some other form before it was melted. In order to process hot liquefied glass, heat-resistant aids and tools are required. The temperature of liquefied glass bottles is around 800 degrees Celsius.

How to deform glass bottles

  • Release agent for mold and / or oven bottom

  • Oven with stepless temperature and rise control up to at least 820 degrees

1. Insert the glass bottle

Place the glass bottle in the oven so that it cannot roll. Coat the contact points between the glass and the mold or oven floor with release agent or lay it out.

2. Initial heating

Set it to 250 degrees and let the oven warm up to this temperature.

3. Onset of melting

For the second heating level, select around 550 degrees as the target temperature and the slowest possible rise setting.

4th. Melt

Depending on the desired degree of melting, select a further increase in temperature. Glass bottles react differently and liquefy between 780 and 850 degrees.

5. Relax

Before removal and final cooling, a relaxation heat of around 530 degrees must act on the deformed glass bottle for at least one, better longer.
