Leveling out wooden floors: creating a level surface

If laminate or a tiled floor is to be laid on an old wooden floor, the wood must first be leveled out. Even when laying a carpet, any unevenness is unattractively expressed. Therefore, here in the instructions we show you how you can level out an old wooden floor in order to then apply a new floor covering.

Level the wooden floor

When you level a wooden floor, you not only create a perfectly level surface for your new flooring. The false ceiling is poorly insulated, especially in older single-family houses. This leads to sound transmission between the floors. The leveling compound (€ 19.95 at Amazon *), which is applied to the wooden floor, improves the sound insulation between the floors at the same time.

1. Prepare the subsurface

The wooden floor must be sanded before you can level it. In this case, beauty does not matter. More importantly, it is that you track splinters and nails that may be protruding. These small quirks must be either sunk or pulled out.

Larger branches and damage should be filled with a wooden piece. Through an asst hole, the compensation mass can run under the wooden floor, which should be prevented.

2. Wooden floor priming

So that the wooden floor can be permanently combined with the compensation mass, a primer must be applied. The easiest way is that with a paint role that you attach to a telescopic handle. So you do not have to bend and have a good reach at work and do not enter the primer. If you use the primer nevertheless economical, no puddles may form. Wood sucks moisture, but swells by too much moisture too. The primer and the wooden floor must therefore dry thoroughly again before the leveling compound can be applied.

3. Mix leveling compound

You have to mix the leveling compound completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. With this work, you cannot gradually work through the room, but always have to completely level the entire floor.

4th. Level the wooden floor

The leveling compound is simply poured out on the floor. Then use the spiked roller to distribute the mass evenly in the room. To do this, put the spiked roller on the telescopic handle to keep a good distance from the moist mass. But before you can start tiling the floor or laying a laminate, you must adhere to the drying times. Otherwise, the wood underneath may be damaged by moisture.

Tips & Tricks If there are only very slight bumps, you can lay a new laminate floor on top of good sound insulation. If impact sound insulation does not appear to be sufficient for the unevenness, a loose fill is also useful to compensate for the unevenness of a laminate floor. This could even be removed again, in contrast to the leveling compound, which changes the wood irreparably.
