In architecture, a bungalow is usually a single-storey construction. If the house has a hipped roof, the attic can be expanded by adding additional floors. Since only the clear standing height of two meters counts as living space, at least three quarters of the storey height must usually be gained.
Jamb or knee stick
A hipped roof can be placed on the house in two different ways. If it lies directly on the ceiling, it forms a junction. A knee stick is the side wall protruding above the floor. If there is a knee stick, a flat and small attic will be created. At the jamb there is only a pointed roof or pointed floor.

If the attic is to be expanded, the required stand height must be created. In the case of a jumble as the starting point, a knee stick must be bricked up or raised, which brings the hipped roof so high that the living space height of two meters is created at least in the middle of the attic.
Building law situation
Before starting the increase, an application for a building permit must always be submitted. After the addition, the building changes its classification from bungalow to single-family home. In many local development plans, however, bungalow settlement areas are explicitly identified. Here it is difficult or even impossible to get a building permit.
Structural procedure when stocking up
The task with a bungalow is always to develop an attic with a small height so that it can be used. If it is to be used as a storage room, it can simply be insulated. Insulation materials must be used that do not have to have a large material thickness for adequate insulation.
If a habitable room or an attic apartment is planned, the roof is lifted with a crane and the knee sticks are bricked up. Depending on the roof pitch, they must have a height of around one meter to 1.50 meters before the roof is put back on.
With more effort, the roof can be provided with one or two dormers, which significantly increase the gain in space and require a lower knee height. In some cases this may be necessary to obtain the building permit. When the roof has been put back on, the attic is expanded according to classic criteria such as flooring, insulation, interior fittings and statics.Tips & Tricks With external access to the attic, you can avoid costly, space-consuming and annoying floor openings and your house usually remains habitable during the construction work.
