This is how you can clean your concrete slabs

Concrete slabs on the terrace get dirty over time, and algae and moss then settle in the joints. A lot of effort is then usually required to clean the concrete stone slabs - but if you proceed in a planned manner, you can keep the workload significantly lower. You can find out how to do this here.

Background information

The weather causes tiny cracks to form on the surface of the concrete blocks, in which moss, algae and dirt can collect. That makes the terrace very unsightly very quickly. There are various ways of removing the dirt, but not all of them are equally effective.

The high pressure cleaner

In principle, high-pressure cleaners work quite well - but you have to be careful with them. Not all concrete blocks are suitable for the use of a high-pressure cleaner at all, and the use of the high-pressure cleaner can also leave clear marks on the stones with other stones, especially when the pressure is high.

In addition, the high-pressure cleaner also whirls the joint sand and small stones out of the joints, which then heavily pollute the rest of the garden and make it possible to refill the joints. You should be careful with added detergents because of the potentially harmful effects on the environment and, moreover, only use the high-pressure cleaner with an attachment.

Chemical detergents

Home recipes such as vinegar cleaners are usually better not to use, but professional cleaners can damage some stones as well as the surrounding garden, groundwater or pets.

In addition, manual scrubbing is a very strenuous task, even with smaller terraces, and is often not very successful. For quick cleaning in between, in order not to let the dirt get too big, it is quite suitable, especially if you use special concrete block cleaners.

Sealing as protection

It is highly recommended that you provide the concrete blocks with an appropriate seal from the outset and also seal the joints tightly. In this way, the concrete block becomes dirt-repellent and cleaning is much easier. The seal should be reapplied every two to three years.

Step-by-step instructions for cleaning the concrete blocks

  • possibly. Concrete block cleaner
  • sealing
  • Scouring sand - as fine-grained and sharp-edged as possible
  • fine broom
  • Household scrubbers
  • High-pressure cleaner with the highest possible performance

1. Remove coarse soiling with abrasive sand

You can remove the coarsest dirt at the beginning by sweeping the fine and sharp-edged sand vigorously over the terrace. This has a polishing effect that primarily breaks up dirt crusts and removes a lot of dirt. The abrasive sand method should therefore be at the beginning.

2. Use patio cleaner

To remove stubborn dirt, you can apply a professional terrace cleaner and let it take effect. This also has a dirt-loosening effect. Then you can use the pressure washer if your stones are suitable for it. However, you should be careful with the addition of cleaning agents to the high-pressure cleaner.

3. Use high pressure cleaner

This takes some patience, as you have to go slowly row by row and keep the beam aimed at a relatively small area at a time. If it has already been pretreated with stone cleaner, it is a little faster. At the end, push the loosened dirt in front of you to rinse the terrace clean.

4th. To seal

Use sealer from the hardware store, depending on the instructions on the packaging, and carefully sweep the still damp joints with paving mortar, this also prevents weeds and moss growth.

Tips & Tricks If you use pressure washers, you should actually use professional grade equipment for patio cleaning rather than home use equipment. They are much more effective and can sometimes be borrowed.
