Lime sandstone ensures fire protection

A solid stone wall can withstand a fire for a very long time because it is not flammable itself. Sand-lime brick has a high bulk density class and is also non-flammable itself. If massive concrete ceilings are also drawn in, the building has almost perfect fire protection. A special fire wall can also be built with sand-lime brick.

Wall thickness and fire wall

If sand-lime brick is used, a wall thickness of 11.5 centimeters is sufficient for the construction of a fire wall. For this, however, the sand-lime brick must be bricked with mortar (7.79 € at Amazon *) and must of course not be bonded with adhesives.

Insulation and sealants

Thanks to the high fire protection requirements that the sand-lime brick fulfills, even unmorted butt joints are permitted. Only the connections to the transverse walls have to be fully filled with mortar.

So that the wall can serve as a fire wall, the insulation materials must be made of mineral wool and have a bulk density of 30 kilos per cubic meter. In addition, the melting point of the mineral wool must be above 1.000 degrees high. The joints must be closed with a special sealing cord or joint cord. These elements must be attached to the wall with a thin-bed mortar, under no circumstances should glue be used.

Interior equipment

In the worst case, the value of a fire protection wall can be rendered completely obsolete by incorrectly furnishing the premises. For example, steel angles that secure the connection between the ceiling and the fire protection wall are no longer permitted today.

There are countless tiny details that have to be observed in order to meet the requirements. Many also clad a fire protection wall with wooden panels, which is also not actually permitted.

cables and wires

Particular attention should also be paid to the laying of power, telephone and television cables. In most cases, no cables may be embedded in the sand-lime brick simply because of the necessary wall thickness.

Tips & Tricks Fire protection walls are often required for extensions such as a winter garden. This also means that window openings may only be located in this wall from a certain height, which must then also be glazed with certain glass.Pay careful attention to the specifications for the fire protection wall. On the one hand, you have to pay for the dismantling yourself if the requirements of the building authority have not been complied with. On the other hand, in the event of a fire, you could also be held liable for damage to the neighbor. If there is then personal injury, the sums quickly exceed the value of the house.
