cut copper sheet

Copper is one of the non-ferrous metals frequently used by craftsmen and also by do-it-yourselfers and hobbyists. This makes cutting copper sheet an equally common processing technique. We have compiled the options for cutting copper sheet below.

Various tools and aids for cutting copper sheets

Copper sheets are commercially available in thicknesses between 0.3 and 1.2 mm. Since copper is relatively soft, it is easy to cut with simple tools. For this purpose, various tools and aids are used:

Copper sheet with housekeeping cutting

For sheet metal thicknesses between 0.3 and 0.6 mm, the copper sheet can be cut relatively easily with an ordinary household scissors. If certain shapes are to be cut out, these can be transmitted either using a template and a gasoline marker on the copper sheet or a paper template are glued.

The cut edges may have to be touched up, because the thicker the copper sheet, the greater the likelihood that the sheet will bend along the cut edge. Therefore, under no circumstances should copper sheets be cut with household scissors that are more than 0.6 mm thick.

Using tin snips

Tin snips can also be used between 0.5 and 1.2 mm. However, with thicker copper sheets, it should be noted that the cut edge can bend. Especially for sheets with a wall thickness of between 0.9 and 1.2 mm. Templates can be used as in the description for household scissors. In addition, it is advisable to use high-quality tin snips to prevent bending as much as possible.

Saw the copper sheet with the fretsaw

Copper sheets of all thicknesses can also be sawed well with the fretsaw. However, the sheet metal should be stretched between two sheets of plywood for sawing. This makes the cut of a significantly higher quality.

Cut the copper sheet with a scroll saw

The scroll saw is ideal, but also expensive to buy. Therefore, the scroll saw is only worthwhile if you want to saw copper sheets with it more often. Otherwise, the cut will be very good and of high quality.

Cut copper sheet with a circular saw

Circular saws, especially table saws, are worthwhile if you want to make cuts on many copper sheets in a row. Make sure you have a suitable saw blade and adjust the speed to the soft copper.

Punching tool for punching out copper sheets

If you want to cut elaborate and detailed figures from a copper sheet, the use of a punching tool is recommended. However, you need a high-quality punching tool, consisting of a matrix, stamp and a really good holding device. In the interplay, figures can then be punched, the punched edges of which do not bend.

Ways to cut copper sheet in industry and craft

Craftsmen also use different devices to cut copper sheets, depending on their craft. The nibbler in particular is often used by plumbers. Industrial applications would be laser and water jet cutting. This enables very precise cuts. Until a few years ago, these techniques were among the really costly cutting processes for copper sheets.

For single pieces or series productions

Today there are some providers on the Internet who at least offer the laser cutting of copper sheets relatively inexpensively. These are well suited for one-off pieces. For small quantities and larger series, you should hire a contractor that specializes in cutting and sawing metals.

Tips & Tricks In addition to cutting copper sheets, cutting copper pipes to length is also frequently used. High quality pipe cutters should be used here. Deburring and calibrating the copper pipes is extremely important, especially when soldering the copper pipes later, since the capillary effect is used during soldering. The distance between the copper pipes pushed into one another and to be soldered must fit exactly.
