Cleaning sand-lime bricks - gently!

Sand-lime brick can also be created without impregnation or plastering. But the stone accepts dirt and is difficult to remove from dirt that has been drawn in. Strong chemical cleaners only attack the surface of the stone and are more likely to cause more damage than the dirt can do.

Brushing and sanding

Since dirt, as I said, can move into the sand-lime brick, especially if it is a little damp, sometimes tougher measures must be taken to clean the sand-lime brick. Therefore, dirt can be removed even with fine sandpaper. After that, however, an impregnation should definitely be applied.

Be careful at work

Plaster residues are usually removed from masonry by acidification. To do this, dilute hydrochloric acid (€ 6.95 at Amazon *) is applied with the sponge. However, in the case of masonry made of sand-lime brick, acidification causes severe damage, which is why it is not permitted according to DIN 18330.

In this case, it is important to take the greatest possible care when laying the wall and especially when grouting the masonry. If gray streaks are first caused by mortar (7.79 € at Amazon *) splashes or impurities, they will remain with the exposed brickwork made of sand-lime brick.

Tips & Tricks Especially with sand-lime brick, the cheapest cleaning tip is the sand-lime brick itself. A smooth fragment can be used as an excellent sanding block. Precisely because the quarry stone is the same color as the masonry itself, there is no risk of discoloration here. In addition, the actual stone color is actually refreshed.
