Tips for buying herringbone parquet

The parquet in herringbone pattern belongs to the group of strip parquet. The wooden bars, arranged at a 90-degree angle, develop very different looks depending on the size and type of wood, which appear noble and more or less distinctive. In most cases, herringbone parquet is glued, but it can also be nailed to the side or laid floating.

From large panels to small sticks

The character of the herringbone depends very much on the dimensions of the individual rods. In the case of parquet with small pieces, the strips are three to five centimeters wide and 15 to twenty centimeters long. The largest rods are up to eight inches wide and up to one meter in length.

The herringbone pattern can be laid single, double or triple with double wooden sticks. The individual rods are arranged with the ends at right angles to one another.

With the French herringbone, the wooden bars are beveled at the ends by 45 degrees and the zigzag course forms a continuous joint between each laying row.

Hardwoods best suited

Basically any hard type of wood is suitable for a herringbone parquet. Oak, smoked oak, cherry and walnut are particularly popular. Because of the high number of butt joints, trees that "work " only slightly, even with temperature differences, are to be preferred to wood with high levels of warping.

The larger the individual wooden sticks in the fish parquet, the more extensive the range of floating tongue and groove products becomes. Herringbone parquet is available in both solid and multilayered versions.

Note the striking appearance

If the selected wood has a distinctive structure, the large number of parquet elements can create a restless and dominant look. Depending on the furnishing style, you should check the sorting before buying.

The lighter the surface of the herringbone parquet, the more pronounced the textures and grains can be. With darker variants, with the exception of very dark surfaces such as smoked oak, the floor markings can be very noticeable.

Tips & Tricks Herringbone is also available as prefabricated parquet with a factory-made seal. For more reliable joint protection, especially with heavily used floors, subsequent complete sealing of the raw parquet is recommended.
