How can I remove contact adhesive?

Nowadays, special contact adhesives are often used to bond the surfaces of different materials together quickly and permanently. However, some advantages can sometimes also become a disadvantage. Namely, for example, when the contact adhesive needs to be removed again at some point.

Special care should be taken during processing

The particularly significant advantage of contact adhesive should be "bought" with special care when working with it: The adhesive effect that occurs immediately after the painted surfaces are pressed together may ultimately be a great advantage, but it can no longer be easily reversed. Therefore, when working on your projects, you should always plan very foresight and really only coat the necessary areas with contact adhesive. Lining your work area with foil or cardboard can also prevent you from later having to remove stubborn dirt from the flooring or other surfaces with contact adhesive. Finally, you must also bear in mind that any attempt at removal, due to the means used, may also damage the affected surfaces of various materials.

What can be used to remove contamination with contact adhesive?

There are basically two different types of contact adhesives: on the one hand, water-based products and, on the other hand, solvent-based and therefore largely waterproof contact adhesives. Water-based contact adhesives can sometimes be loosened by moistening them with water, but this requires a lot of patience. In most cases, however, contact adhesives contain solvents that evaporate when used in the so-called "flash-off time". In order to liquefy such an adhesive again, you usually need solvents such as nitro thinner, ethyl acetate or acetone. However, you must first clarify whether the surface to be cleaned can withstand such a treatment, as metals such as copper can be damaged by acetone. In addition, many of these solvents are not harmless to health, which is why protective clothing should be worn even with good ventilation.

Remove the contact adhesive over the entire surface?

Once you have bleed two wooden plates with each other through the flat application of contact adhesive, they will hardly ever be able to solve them from each other again. But it is the same, if the surface coated with the glue is still freely accessible in front of you. Then, for example, they can drink a fabric lobe with a suitable solvent such as ethyl acetate or nitro diluents and spread them on the adhesive to be removed. In order to improve the effect, you can then cover the whole thing with a plate or a little aluminum foil so that the solvent in the air is not simply evaporated. Subsequently, the contact adhesive with dry cloths have been rewritten to this type. But always pay attention to wear suitable protective clothing and apply the solvents only to suitable surfaces.
